This page shows how to add the Telivy MCP server to Visual Studio Code so GitHub Copilot can use Telivy tools in agent mode. VS Code connects to remote MCP servers over HTTP and can prompt you for the API key once and store it in its secure storage, so the key never has to be written into a configuration file.

Prerequisites

Add the server

1

Choose where to add it

  • To use Telivy in one workspace, create or open .vscode/mcp.json in that workspace.
  • To use Telivy in every workspace, open the Command Palette (Cmd+Shift+P on macOS, Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Linux) and run MCP: Open User Configuration.
2

Add the Telivy entry

If the file already has inputs or servers, add these entries to the existing arrays and objects. VS Code uses servers as the top-level key in this file, not mcpServers.
3

Enter the key

The first time the server starts, VS Code asks for the Telivy API key and hides what you type. It stores the value securely and reuses it on later starts. The file contains only the input reference, so a workspace .vscode/mcp.json can be committed and each person enters their own key.

Verify the connection

Run MCP: List Servers from the Command Palette, select telivy, and choose Start Server if it is not running. Choose Show Output to open the server’s log, where a 401 response means the key is wrong. Then open Copilot Chat in agent mode and check that the Telivy tools are listed in the tools picker. See also Troubleshooting. If you regenerate the Telivy API key, VS Code keeps sending the old value it stored, and Telivy answers with 401. VS Code stores the value under the input’s id, so change the id in both places (for example to telivy-api-key-2 in inputs and in ${input:telivy-api-key-2}), save the file and restart the server to be asked for the new key.

Approvals

Copilot asks you to confirm tool calls from MCP servers before it runs them. Read the tool name and arguments in each confirmation, and approve Telivy tools that create, update, rescan or uninstall something one call at a time instead of allowing them for the whole session.

Try it

Open Copilot Chat, switch to agent mode, and send a prompt such as:
Expand the tool call in the chat to confirm it came from the telivy server. For more prompts, see Example workflows.

Remove the server

Run MCP: List Servers, select telivy, open its menu and choose Uninstall. If Uninstall is not offered, delete the telivy entry and the telivy-api-key input from the mcp.json file where you added them.
